While climate mitigation focuses on reducing emissions, adaptation helps people, systems and environments respond to climate impacts such as heat, flooding and drought. With climate change is already affecting the communities around our operations, we focus on building resilience to equip communities to withstand disruption, recover faster and remain stronger over time.

Climate shocks affect the communities where MAS operates, disrupting lives, livelihoods, supply chains and business continuity. When this happens, resources are often diverted from long-term development into short-term relief. That cycle is costly and unsustainable. Building community resilience helps shift the focus from reactive response to long-term preparedness, strengthening both people and operations, and support more secure, adaptive futures.

MAS focuses on identifying climate risks across locations and developing adaptation programmes suited to local needs. These includes education and awareness, resilient infrastructure, and nature-based approaches that strengthen ecosystems and reduce vulnerability. By working with communities and local stakeholders, we aim to build the knowledge, systems and support needed to help people anticipate, withstand and recover from climate-related disruption over time.

This KPI is focused on building sustainability knowledge and awareness in every region where MAS operates. It is about equipping young people, local communities and other key stakeholders with practical understanding of environmental issues, so they are better able to respond to environmental challenges and contribute to more sustainable futures. 

Communities play a vital role in shaping environmental progress and long-term social wellbeing. Yet access to structured sustainability education is still limited in many places, reducing awareness, resilience and participation in more sustainable behaviours. By investing in sustainability learning, MAS can help build local capacity, support future generations and strengthen shared value within communities. It also helps deepen trust, strengthen long-term partnerships and connect local development more meaningfully with broader sustainability goals.

MAS will expand its current initiatives to establish sustainability education programmes across all regions we operate in, shaped by local priorities and community needs. These programmes cover areas such as climate awareness, waste reduction, circularity, resource efficiency and resilience. By working with schools, local authorities and community organisations, we aim to extend reach across each region through structured plans, measurable outcomes and regular review to ensure consistency and long-term impact.
